Fat Burning Fat

Most people trying to lose weight have been told time after time that to be successful, they must stop consuming fat.  In reality, the body needs fat to burn fat!  Opposite of carbohydrates, consumption of fat has no affect on insulin.  The carbohydrates are the primary stimulator of insulin and protein, not fat, since the body does not store consumed fat as excess fat.  Fat has another benefit in that it helps slow down the rate that carbohydrates enter the bloodstream, acting much like a control mechanism.  The slower that carbohydrates enter your bloodstream, the slower insulin is produced, which equates to a lower the level of insulin.  The result is that any stored fat is released for energy.

Additionally, fat is what causes cholecystokinin (CCK), a hormone released from the stomach.  When CCK is released, it immediately goes to the brain telling it to stop eating.  For this reason, when too much fat is cut from your diet and replaced with carbohydrates, you are causing the hormonal signals to become distorted when in fact they should be stopping you from consuming too many calories.  However, just because you can eat fat, that does mean you can go overboard.  A good motto to remember is, “Everything in moderation.”  Although fat has nothing to do with insulin, you still want to consume low amounts of saturated fats.  You see, when the membranes in the body have too much fluid, they lose rigidity, which is needed to function properly.  The body will naturally produce the required amount of saturated fat as a way of increasing viscosity.  In contrast, if you are consuming too much saturated fat, these cell membranes become overly rigid.  At this point, the body is unable to produce polyunsaturated fat and the fluidity of the membrane cannot be improved.  When this occurs, the body’s receptors cannot function properly and the result is that more insulin is produced to help lower the levels of blood sugar.  This is exactly why the amount of saturated fat should be minimal.
